The Civic Mayor is elected by fellow Members of the Council at the Annual Council Meeting and holds office for one Municipal year.
On 19 June 2009 Councillor Ros Jones was elected Civic Mayor for the Municipal Year 2009/2010. In 2006 Councillor Ros Jones was elected as a Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Councillor representing the Askern Spa Ward. Councillor Jones has vast experience in local government having working for Doncaster Council and Sheffield City Council.
The Civic Mayor represents the Authority at ceremonial events and welcomes enquiries from members of the public, partner organisations and community groups, to support their events, celebrations and promotions whenever possible, subject to existing diary commitments.
Traditionally during the year of office, the Civic Mayor raises funds for the Civic Charity Fund and selects a charitable organisation to receive a donation at the end of their term of office. This year, the Civic Mayor has selected two charitable organisations which are the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust Body Scanner Appeal and Help for Heroes, the national charity set up in 2007 to assist those servicemen and women who have been wounded in the UK's current conflicts. Donations may be sent to the Civic Office, 2 Priory Place, Doncaster DN1 1BN (cheques payable to Civic Charity Fund).
