The Doncaster Metropolitan Borough is divided into 21 areas known as wards and each ward is represented by 3 democratically elected Councillors. There is a total of 63 ward Councillors altogether. Usually elections are held by thirds, which means that one Councillor from each ward is elected each year.
A Councillor serves a four year term of office which means that every fourth year no election takes place for ward Councillors. Doncaster has an Elected Mayor who also serves a four year term of office and that election takes place in the year when there are no local elections. The last local election was in May 2008 when 21 seats were subject to election, the next mayoral elections are in 2009.
Currently there are 27 Labour Councillors, 12 Liberal Democrat Councillors, 12 Alliance of Independent Councillors, 1 Independent Councillor, 9 Conservative Councillors and 3 Community Group Councillors.
As Councillors for Doncaster Council, our elected Members are entitled to specific basic allowances and allowable expenses. The allowance amounts are set each year and are payable to those Members undertaking the specified duties.
