Geographic Information (GI) is any information about an object that has a geographic reference such as the population of a ward, the number of planning applications per parish or the location of abandoned vehicles.
GI used to be the realm of specialist users with complex Geographical Information System (GIS) software to manage functions such as Street Lighting and Highways. However, the authority is now integrating GI with all core business systems via national initiatives such as the National Land and Property Gazetteer and the National Street Gazetteer.
The Information Management section provides a range of comprehensive services covering all aspects of GI and GIS. In addition to this, a number of services are also provided under the Doncaster Spatial Mapping Partnership (DSmart) framework to members of the Doncaster Strategic Partnership (DSP).
DSmart has been designed and developed to meet the growing demand for geographic data sharing and analysis throughout the authority and its partners in the DSP. The DSmart Partnership will help promote the use of GI and GIS within Doncaster, and assist in improving data management and service delivery throughout Doncaster.
