Doncaster Council, Doncaster Police and Doncaster Primary Care Trust have announced the following advice to local residents across the Borough in an effort to raise awareness of important health and safety issues following the recent flooding.
Residents can be assured that health problems arising from the floods are small providing people take sensible precautions and are advised to take note of the following information:
Electrical Supply
- YEDL (Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Ltd) have advised all customer homes affected by the floods should switch off the electrical installations if likely to be affected by water and it is safe to do so.
- Home owners should not operate equipment which is in water, or whilst they are standing in water.
- Residents to remain away from any live equipment submerged in water.
- Residents are advised to have their electrical installations checked by an approved contractor before switching their supply back on.
- The YEDL helpline number is 0800 375 675
Water Safety
- Avoid direct contact with floodwater where possible, using protective clothing (wellingtons and rubber gloves) whilst cleaning up. And always wash your hands with soap and clean water before eating food and after cleaning up.
- Any contaminated areas should be cleaned using soapy water followed by disinfectant.
- Drinking water has not been affected and is entirely safe.
- Detailed advice is available on the Health Protection Agency website www.hpa.org.uk
- Parents are encouraged to prevent children playing in flood water as the depths may vary.
The majority of Doncaster family doctor surgeries are operating as normal, with the exception of those based in Bentley. If residents are registered with a Bentley practice, they are advised to still ring the surgery as normal and an answerphone message will advise of the cover arrangements.
Any residents who may feel unwell are advised to ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or a family doctor for advice.
