Introduction to Bessacarr and Cantley

The Bessacarr and Cantley Neighbourhood covers the villages of Bessacarr, Cantley, Branton and Old Cantley.

It covers the area from the Dome roundabout up to the motorway bridge on Bawtry Road

Bessacarr, Cantley and Old Cantley are three adjacent communities, which are naturally brought together, have developed over the years as distinct villages of Doncaster with their own character and landscape.  They lie approximately 3 miles away from the town centre and are, accordingly, well placed to strategic road links and central facilities.

Bessacarr

Bessacarr is considered to be the second largest privately owned estate in Europe but does not have a great choice of leisure and shopping facilities. Doncaster golf course, tennis club and library are exceptions. It falls within the catchment of Hall Cross College and has two local primary schools. It is serviced by 2 dental practices and 10 medical practices. Out of the 88 communities of Doncaster, it ranks 69 in terms of the general deprivation indicator.

There are a number of bus services running through Bessacarr as Bawtry Road serves many other villages surrounding it, and access to the motorway network is available nearby.

Cantley

Cantley, by comparison, ranks 26 out of the 88 communities in terms of deprivation.  One dentist and 11 medical practices service Cantley.  It falls within the catchment of Hall Cross College and also has The McAuley Catholic School and a primary school within its boundary.  It has two churches, a crematorium, library, several shops and large patches of woodland in addition to the extensive recreational facilities provided by Cantley Park and Sandall Beat Wood.

The picturesque village of Old Cantley is placed alongside Cantley and can boast a number of listed buildings including Old Cantley Hall. Statistics suggest that Old Cantley as one of the most desirable places to live in Doncaster.

Branton

Branton is an attractive village situated about 5 miles south east of Doncaster, adjacent to the village of Auckley.  It is a residential area but has few local facilities apart from a primary school, post office, and riding school at Brockholes Farm.  This attraction includes a visitors’ centre, zoo and guided school visits.

The village is surrounded by agricultural land that is cut through by the M18, and a sand quarry is sited nearby.  Residents will feel the impact of the new Robin Hood Airport in terms of noise and traffic congestion but will benefit from employment opportunities.
