The Planning System: General Principles

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) was created as a central department in its own right in May 2002. It is responsible for policy development for many different Local Government activities, these include planning and sustainable communities.

In May 2006 the office came under the control of Ruth Kelly and was re-named as Communities and Local Government.

This page provides information about many different aspects of the planning system, to help you understand how the system operates and what guidance is available to aid planners in making informed decisions.
