Doncaster Geodiversity Assessment (May 2007)

The Doncaster Geodiversity Assessment was produced and written by the British Geological Survey, on behalf of Doncaster Council and contains information on the importance of geodiversity for Doncaster, our local geology, mineral resources and groundwater resources and geological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s).

The report also contains information on the re-assessment of our RIGS (Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites), which updates and expands on the 1997 South Yorkshire RIGS group survey of geologically Important Sites in Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham.

Since the 1997 survey the concept of geodiversity has become more important, due the advent of Planning and Policy Statement 9 Biodiversity and Geological Conservation (PPS9) which places equal weight on biodiversity and geodiversity.

The Doncaster RIGS resurvey took place between January and March 2007 and the information was collected using the UKRIGS site assessment form and entered onto a UKRIGS database. The consultants experienced problems using the database, especially when importing and exporting data and translating it into a user-friendly format. The database entries were all exported and appended to ESRI shape files for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
