Development Control

The purpose of the planning system is to ensure that development is allowed where it is needed, while ensuring that the character and amenity of any given area is not adversely affected. This system works within the framework of legislation approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the approved policies of the council and also taking into account representations made by technical consultees such as Highway Authority, Environment Agency and by the general public including neighbours.
The council currently considers over 3000 planning applications each year. These range from small householder extensions, changes of use of buildings, advert consent up to major projects around the borough.
