Introduction to Street Naming and Numbering

Building Control is responsible for the allocation of postal addresses across Doncaster Borough. Detailed guidance notes are attached below, but, in summary, for street naming and numbering to be initiated the following information is required:

1. Two copies of the site layout plan, A4 size, with plot numbers clearly indicated.
2. Suggestions for street names. Please refrain from using the name of anyone living or recently deceased and tree names.
3. Confirmation of your agreement to meet the cost of providing and fixing street nameplates as required.
4. If the proposed names are ambiguous, please provide details of their origin.

Street Naming Charges

From the 1st April 2007 the following charges apply:

CATEGORY 1     £75 NO VAT  (Additional road £25 NO VAT)

Naming of a new road which may be for any number of dwellings or industrial units (Note if more than one road per development additional charge applies)

CATEGORY 2    £50 NO VAT

Naming or numbering of more than one apartments / flats, new dwellings etc, but not involving new road naming.

CATEGORY 3   £30 NO VAT

Naming or numbering of a single building (New or existing).

House Naming

The allocation of a house name is permitted but where a numbering scheme is in place it would be additional to that number and not a replacement.

In such cases there is no requirement to inform the Council. This is not the case in some parts of the Borough where a numbering scheme is not in place. Here any new names need to be checked out by the Council to help avoid duplication or similarity.
