Mexborough

Mexborough Market

Mexborough is the most Westerly of Doncaster’s priority areas and is situated in the Dearne Valley. Mexborough has good road links to Barnsley (A6023, A633), Doncaster (via Conisbrough on the A6023) and Rotherham (A6023, A633).

The town is also served by good public transport with links to Rotherham, Sheffield, Meadowhall, Barnsley and Doncaster by train and bus. Although Mexborough has never had its own colliery, coal mining and associated industries were the main employers of the town.

Today Mexborough is a bustling town, though still suffering from the decline of the coal industry, and the social and economic problems that were brought by this decline.

Rural Communities

Barnburgh is a rural settlement, with a very small village centre. It lies to the north of Mexborough, and adjoins Harlington. Both villages are accessible via Adwick upon Dearne; this is the smallest settlement in this Neighbourhood Area. It is located on the western edge of Doncaster and is within close proximity of the Dearne Valley.

High Melton is a rural settlement located between Barnburgh and Sprotbrough. It is mainly residential and is surrounded by wooded areas and countryside. It has no services other than High Melton College campus.
