Introduction to Greater Adwick

Brodsworth Hall

The Greater Adwick area of North Doncaster is made up of a number of urban villages including Adwick-Le-Street, Highfields, Woodlands, Carcroft and Skellow. Further to this the area consists of numerous largely rural areas and settlements including Brodsworth & Pickburn, Clayton, Hampole & Skelbrooke, Hickleton, Hooton Pagnell and Marr.

With 8,124 households these neighbourhoods have a combined population of 19,868, with the highest concentration being in Woodlands.  This combined population is almost 7% of the total population of the Borough, and represents 39.4% of the population of the North of Doncaster.

Geographically, Greater Adwick is largest of the three north areas at 68.9 km2, with a population density of 288  people per km2, this is slightly less than the North average of 327 people per km2.

In terms of the 2004 Indices of Deprivation, Greater Adwick exhibits a diverse range of villages and communities extending from some of the most affluent in the Borough to some of the most deprived. Of the 88 communities within Doncaster, Highfields is ranked as the 3rd most deprived community with Hickleton at the other end of the spectrum scoring 83 out of 88 in terms of overall deprivation.  As a result of the deprivation Highfields has been allocated almost £1M Neighbourhood Renewal Funding, as well as £300K Green Corridor Funding which is currently in its Masterplanning stages.  Woodlands is also benefiting from £631K Green Corridor funding, and projects are currently underway to regenerate the Woodlands Squares and New Estate areas of the village.

The biggest employers within the area are B & Q Warehouse, Asda Stores and DFS, whilst facilities include Adwick Leisure Centre, Carcroft Motorcycle Park and various activities take place at the Bullcroft Memorial Hall in Carcroft.

Access to Doncaster town centre is via the A638 and is served by a regular public transport system, along with good rail networks from the recently refurbished Adwick-Le-Street station. Adwick benefits from excellent road links with easy access to the A1, which in turn provides connections to M18, M1 and M62.

The electoral Wards falling within Greater Adwick are Great North Road, Adwick and Sprotbrough Wards.
