Changing Lives

Working in partnership with the Government the Safer Doncaster Partnership is helping communicate the work that is being done in Doncaster to tackle drugs, crime and anti-social behaviour through taking part in the Changing Lives Campaign.

Alongside the Garage, there are many other services available in Doncaster to help residents tackle substance misuse:

‘The Bungalow’ in Moorends provides a multitude of activities and trips for all members of the community including diversionary activities for young people and services for clients. Core services are delivered for the Garage, housing, Pupil Referral Unit for young people who cannot attend mainstream schools, and there are close links with Customer Services. A Complementary Therapist provides treatment for all service users and also the elderly and disabled. Computer courses help clients gain IT qualifications and allow progression into other courses.

‘The Move Project’ in Conisbrough supports vulnerable young people with the youth engagement project. Opportunities include a 12 week Go Kart course (including building and maintenance, engine theory and maintenance, kart testing and race tuition); youth achievement awards; OCN accreditation; ECDL; basic first aid; Millennium Volunteer awards, access to career advice and 1-1 mentoring.

The Depot Community Drugs Team offer support to clients and their families in Mexborough. They offer Early Interventions Work, which is the first point of contact for those clients wishing to access treatment. Workers provide advice, information, pre-treatment work and drop-ins for information and benefits advice. The Family and Friends Support group gives advice and training to family members, and newly formed Peer Support Group is attended well and is completely led by the clients themselves.

The PCT Shared Care teams offer support and counselling to those clients who wish to access treatment through their own GP and deliver detoxification's with their support. This means clients do not have to travel into Doncaster town centre to access treatment at the Garage, but can do so in their own community.

BASH in Bentley offer an abundance of services for drug users, their families and friends in an informal setting. These include support and advice, auricular acupuncture, counselling, pre-treatment courses, referrals to treatment, a drop-in 3 afternoons per week, anger management, community outreach, and a successful Family and Friends Group to people in Woodlands, Bentley, Scawsby, Scawthorpe, Adwick, Toll Bar, Arksey, Carcroft, and the town end of Sprotbrough.
