Doncaster’s Designated Public Place Orders (DPPOs) were introduced in October 2006. Trialed in Mexborough and Doncaster town centre, they provide the police with the power to request a person to stop drinking alcohol in a specific place if they are causing a nuisance. In the event of the person refusing to do so, the police can confiscate their alcoholic drinks, issue them with a fine, or even place them under arrest.
The DPPOs are supported by other measures including a new enforcement strategy, close liaison with drug and alcohol agencies and education and outreach work.
Signs are placed in the DPPO areas to warn residents that the orders are being implemented whilst further communication is done through schools, Youth Centres, local Tenants and Residents Associations (TARAs) and Neighbourhood Watch groups to ensure that as many residents as possible are aware of the orders.
Following the success of the pilot scheme, six more Designated Public Place Orders (DPPO), covering nine areas across Doncaster including Armthorpe, Edenthorpe, Stainforth, Kirk Sandall, Barnby Dun, Rossington, Bentley, Balby and Hexthorpe were introduced in August 2007.
The DPPOs were introduced following public consultation when residents showed overwhelming support for the scheme.
