South Yorkshire was designated as an Objective 1 area, which is the highest category of European support, at the Berlin Summit in 1999. The Objective 1 Programme in South Yorkshire was launched in July 2000 and closed for new investments at the end of 2006. Funded projects have until the end of 2008 to spend these European funds.
The Objective 1 Programme in South Yorkshire is a £2.4 billion investment programme that includes over £770 million from the European Union’s Structural Fund budget as well as public and private sector resources. South Yorkshire was one of Europe’s poorer areas with fewer businesses and fewer and less well-paid jobs than other regions.
The current programmes from Objective One end in 2008.
All the funds needed to be contracted by June 2007.
Doncaster has done well from Objective One funding. Examples of schemes which were funded from Objective One are Finningley Business Park, Doncaster Frenchgate Interchange and the development at Helios in Thorne. These are in addition to major projects in 14-19 education, youth engagement and community partnerships.
