The Central Area is largely made up of residential and commercial areas and has a population of approximately 58,000, just over a fifth of the total population that live in the Doncaster Borough. The area covers the main urban residential neighbourhoods and the town centre, which is the focus of economic development, with a number of transformational projects such as the Transport Interchange and Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Education City.

The communities within Central Doncaster are aligned into four Neighbourhood Management Areas overseen by an Area Service Director:

  • Balby and Hexthorpe
  • Hyde Park, Belle Vue, Balby Bridge, Bennetthorpe and Town Moor
  • Wheatley, Intake and Clay Lane
  • Town Centre, Lower Wheatley and Lakeside

Each of these four areas has a Neighbourhood Manager who is responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of these services, working in partnership with a range of agencies to deliver joined up services that address needs identified for the area and which have been developed into a range of shared priorities.
