Home Appreciation Loan
Although Housing Renovation Grants are no longer available, you may be eligible for an Home Appreciation Loan if you are unable to obtain a High Street Loan to carry out repairs to your home.
The Home Appreciation Loans are administered through the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Home Loans Service within Sheffield City Council. We can help people who live in Doncaster access these loans, if they meet the necessary criteria.
How does the loan work?
- The amount you borrow is calculated as a percentage of your home's unimproved value at the time you take out the loan;
- The amount you borrow can normally a minimum of £2,000 up to a maximum of £30,000;
- You cannot normally borrow more than 50% of the unimproved value of your home;
- If you already have a mortgage or other secured loans on your home, your total secured borrowing must not normally exceed 70% of the unimproved value of your home;
- There are no monthly repayments and no set repayment term;
- It is secured as a legal charge against your property;
- It is repaid when you transfer ownership of your home to someone else;
- We will help you determine what work can be included within the loan and assist you with the application process.
You can apply for a loan if:
- You own your own home and live in it;
- You meet our vulnerability criteria, for example you are elderly, on low income or in poor health;
- You are unable to access a loan through a high street lender;
- You have enough equity in you home for us to be able to register a legal charge against;
- You have a mortgage on your home and your lender will give consent for our legal charge to be registered.
