The Six Streets Hyde Park scheme Transformational Project began on the 1st April 2005 as a Partnership between Doncaster Council, New Deal for Communities and the local residents with funding from what is now the Department of Communities and Local Government and was estimated to be a 5-6 year programme to transform this area of Hyde Park.
The project is intended to create a radical transformation of an area of pre-1919 terraced houses through selective demolition, area remodelling, home improvement, new build provision, environmental improvements with improved use of public space and a cross tenure approach to area management with strong resident involvement.
Over 250 demolitions were carried out in strategic areas to enable the new build provision to integrate with the remaining 264 existing properties. Selective demolitions to improve access to the rears of these properties have also been carried out and the final demolitions were completed in October 2009.
In September 2009 Cabinet confirmed that Doncaster Council will go ahead with plans to refurbish remaining houses on Six Streets. The works are expected to start in 2010. This means that nearly £1.7 million will now be spent on planned external refurbishment to the fronts of 264 properties.
Through extensive resident consultation over 95% of owners have indicated they wish to be part of this external works programme.
Following a re-tender process through the Developers Panel to appoint a developer for the cleared site, recommendations that Lovell Partnership be approved, as the developer will be made to Cabinet in early 2010. Lovell’s bid proposes to deliver 121 new homes on the cleared site and they are currently working with the Council to agree a Development Agreement to allow them to progress to a planning application if Cabinet approval is granted.
