Naming Ceremonies

Naming ceremonies offer families an opportunity to welcome a child into the family and the wider community and to announce the name or names that have been chosen. The service can have no religious content and has no legal status.

Doncaster Register Office is delighted to offer a civil ceremony for baby naming. It allows parents to mark the arrival of their child in a non-religious yet formal ceremony. The occasion gives parents the opportunity to make promises as to how the child will be brought up, and have this witnessed by their family and friends.

This is in response to the needs of parents who might not wish to have a religious ceremony but who may still want a meaningful event and of parents whose religions do not have ceremonies that signify the arrival of a child.

Children of any age can have a naming ceremony, they aren't just for babies. A parent, or anyone who has legal guardianship of a child, can arrange a naming ceremony. Parents do not need to be married to arrange a naming ceremony.

You can have a ceremony at Doncaster Register Office from Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 11:30am or 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Alternatively you may prefer to have the ceremony held at one of the many premises throughout Doncaster already approved for Civil Marriages (see list of venues here). We are able to conduct ceremonies at these venues from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturdays or 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sundays. Fees currently stand at £43 for a ceremony at the Register Office or £130 for a ceremony at approved premises. (Fees vaid until 31/3/2009.)

If you are interested in arranging a Naming Ceremony for your child please contact one of our staff members to discuss your request on (01302) 364922.
