What is the Gender Equality Scheme?

The purpose of the Gender Equality Scheme is to provide a practical framework that enables Doncaster Council to tackle discrimination and take action where there are barriers preventing people from accessing services, employment opportunities and information.  The scheme takes a holistic approach to gender equality, recognising that each person has their own unique experiences and needs.

It is a specific equality duty for all public bodies to produce a Gender Equality Scheme.  The Gender Equality Duty was introduced into legislation in the Equality Act 2006, amending the Sex Discrimination Act.  It incorporates the general duties that are placed on public bodies, to have ‘due regard’ to the need to:

The Gender Equality Duty aims to make gender equality a central part of Doncaster’s policy-making, strategy formulation, service delivery and employment practice.

It is intended that the scheme will lead to improved gender equality outcomes for all of Doncaster’s communities and those who live, visit and work in Doncaster.
