Reasons for food hygiene training

The incidence of confirmed cases of food poisoning in Britain has increased dramatically over the past few years.

The consequences of a single food poisoning outbreak can be extremely damaging to any food business whatever the size of the operation. In addition an individual case of food poisoning can be very unpleasant and sometimes life threatening.

Most experts in food hygiene agree that a reduction in food poisoning can be achieved by the effective education of food handlers. The current legislation states that everyone handling food in a food business should be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters 'commensurate with their work activity'.

Training at all levels is an essential in any business, from production line staff to senior management. A well trained workforce leads to a safer product and a more efficient and cost effective business.

The Health Education Unit can provide this specialist training and help you meet your training needs.

We believe that training should be enjoyable and not feared, therefore emphasis is placed on informality 'to learn by doing' rather than being academic. This approach results in increased awareness and positive attitudes, the consequence of which should be the reduction of the risk of food poisoning.
