The network of drains and sewers which take sewage away from your home is part private and part public.
The large sewers, normally under the road are usually owned by the water company, e.g Yorkshire Water and Seven Trent Water. These are maintained by the water companies and are called public sewers. However, in some cases, the whole network of drains and sewers may be private and will be the joint responsibility of all the properties joined to that network.
The drains or sewers which connect your property to the public sewers are referred to as private drains or sewers. They belong to you as the householder, or your landlord if you are a tenant. You are responsible for their maintenance and repair, just as you are for the house itself.
