To further meet the requirements of the E.C. Directive and for the protection of the public, sampling programmes have been drawn up with regard to food standards and microbiological examination of foodstuffs.
Some 80 samples of various foods are taken every year to examine their compliance with composition and labelling standards. This has resulted in varying action being taken, from giving advice to taking prosecutions.
Approximately 120 samples of food are taken annually for microbiological examination. These relate to highly perishable or high risk foodstuffs and the programme is designed to monitor both the standard of hygiene in the handling practices and procedures of food production as well as the bacteriological quality of the food.
The Authority takes approximately 51 feedstuffs samples annually to monitor compositional and contamination issues.
