The Health & Safety Team

The Council is responsible for enforcing the law on health and safety at work in most of the workplaces in the Borough, apart from factories, local authority premises and Government premises, which are the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Environmental Health Officers will investigate complaints made to them by employees about unhealthy or unsafe working conditions.  The confidentiality of any complaints will be respected.  

Neglect of health and safety at work can lead to ill health and accidents, which can be fatal in some cases.

Certain types of injury, diseases and dangerous occurrences arising out of a work activity, are required to be reported to us by law under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations(RIDDOR).  The team will then investigate these as appropriate. Details of the types of incidents that need to be reported and the means by which they can be reported can be found by clicking on the 'Report an Accident' link in the left hand menu.

The team are keen to offer advice to business on how to reduce accidents and ill health and help them save money by doing this.

The team have the power to serve notices to improve working conditions where the law is being broken or take more serious enforcement action if an employer has been negligent or flouting the law.

The Health and Safety team have an enforcement policy which is drawn up in conjunction with other neighbouring authorities.
