The new collections have helped to increase recycling rates from 19.6% in 2005/06 to 24.3% in 2006/07. The introduction of the green bins has helped residents to recycle more of their green waste and thin cardboard which will help avoid government fines for exceeding landfill waste quantities and will also contribute to a more efficient service and a cleaner, greener environment.
In 2006/07 13,462 tonnes of green waste was collected at the kerbside and composted. So far this year (end May) 4,500 tonnes has already been collected, this is a huge improvement.
The green box for ‘dry recyclables’ (which include paper, glass, cans, clothes, shoes and plastic bottles in some areas) is still collected every week and the participation rate for the use of kerbside green boxes has also risen to approximately 73%.
Example collection timetable:
Week A
Green Box: ‘dry recyclables’
Green Bin: garden waste and thin cardboard
Week B
Green Box: ‘dry recyclables’
Black Bin: rubbish that cannot be recycled |
