Acids
Acids used at home are hazardous waste.
How to dispose
If you wish to dispose of any acids please contact us for more advice. Please contact Resource Recovery on 01302 736000.
Notes
Do not pour them down the drain.
Aerosols
Aluminium and steel aerosols can be deposited in a can bank and green box, please always remove the plastic nozzle.
Notes
Remember that aerosols should be completely empty before being discarded.
Never attempt puncture, crush or burn aerosol cans.
Aluminium Cans & Foil
Recycling aluminium cans makes good environmental sense. Making a new aluminium can from an old one uses 95% less energy than manufacturing it from raw materials.
How to dispose
Take to the can banks or place in kerbside green box.
Notes
If possible please wash and squash.
Appliances
Try to reuse the appliance when you no longer need it.
How to dispose
Please contact 01302 736960 for a free collection if the appliance can be reused. Alternatively take it to any Household Waste Recycling Centre where they will either be used or recycled by scrap merchants.

Asbestos
Asbestos is a hazardous substance and must be treated with special care as asbestos is damaging to your health.

Doncaster Council offer a free collection for cement bonded asbestos, please contact Resource Recovery on 01302 736000 for more advice and to arrange a collection.

Batteries
Millions of these are thrown away every year even though they contain heavy metals that are harmful to the environment.
How to dispose
Both Car and household batteries can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
Wherever possible always consider buying rechargeable batteries.
Bedding /Blankets
How to dispose
Please donate clean unwanted items to your local charity shop or voluntary organisation. Some items can also be placed in a textile bank.
Beds
How to dispose
If beds are not suitable for reuse please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for a bulky collection service (there is a charge for this service) or take to any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
Beds can be re-used. If you have a bed suitable for reuse please contact Remove 01302 736090 for a free collection.
Books
How to dispose
Take it to a charity or second hand bookshop who will take books in good condition, or they can be placed in book banks.
Notes
When you’ve finished with a book, don’t throw it out, pass it to a friend.
Building Materials/Rubble
How to dispose
Some of these materials can be reused, if you have no use for them a reasonable amount can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
If you have a large amount of building material and rubble it may be worth hiring a skip. Strictly no commercial waste accepted at Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Bulky Household Waste Items
Doncaster Council offer a collection service for bulky items that cannot be reused or recycled. Please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for a collection.

There is a charge for this service.
C
Cans
Recycling steel cans conserves raw materials used in their manufacture. Making new cans from recycled cans rather than from raw materials creates an energy saving of 75%.
How to dispose
Recycle your aluminium and steel cans in your kerbside green box, local can bank or at any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes

Caravans
How to dispose
Local companies can be found in your local telephone directory or please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for more details.
Notes
Caravans that cannot be sold on can be taken to a scrap merchant to be recycled.
Cardboard

Notes
Boxes can be reused for storage or donated to your local school or playgroup. Alternatively small amounts of cardboard can be placed in a composter.
Cards
Some larger nationwide stores collect Christmas Cards for charity.
How to dispose
Greetings cards can be recycled when placed in your local paper bank or kerbside green box.
Notes
Cards can also be reused, made into gift tags or donated to your local playgroup.
Carpets and Rugs
Good quality carpets and rugs can be reused by selling on or donating to charity or voluntary groups.
How to dispose
As a last resort unwanted carpets should be disposed of at any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
Carpets that cannot be reused can be used at allotments and gardening groups as mulch.
Carrier Bags
Reuse carrier bags wherever possible, such as using them as bin liners.
How to dispose
Carrier bag recycling is available at selected supermarkets.
Some stores also offer a financial incentive if carrier bags are reused.
Notes
Many large stores now offer ‘bag for life’ these bags are more durable and last longer. When this bag reaches the end of its life the store will replace the bag and the old one can be recycled.
Cassette Tapes
How to dispose
As a last resort unwanted Cassette Tapes should be disposed of in your refuse bin.
Notes
Unwanted cassette tapes can be donated to the library service for reuse.
Ceramics
How to dispose
Broken ceramics can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centre or used for drainage in plant pots.
Notes
Unbroken ceramics can be donated to your local charity shop.
Chipboard

CD’s
How to dispose
Pass unwanted CD’s to friends or family to use or they can be donated to your local charity shop.
Notes
If a CD is not functioning it makes an interesting coaster.
Charity Shops
Charity Shops welcome a wide range of items. A full list of charity shops is listed in your local telephone directory.
Christmas Trees
How to dispose
Recycle your Christmas tree by taking it any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
At Christmas time please contact Customer Services or check the local paper to check what schemes are running over the festive period.
Notes
Alternatively, purchase a tree with a root and plant in the garden or an artificial tree that can be reused year after year.
Clothing
How to dispose
All clothing can be reused or recycled when placed in your green box, local textile bank or Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
Clothing in good condition can be donated to your local charity shop.
Coat Hangers
Many charity shops can use coat hangers to display clothes, or pass on to family or friends to reuse.
Composting
Composting is simply the recycling of organic waste. Making compost at home is one of the best ways of protecting the environment. Typically one third of household waste consists of organic matter. Organic waste such as kitchen and garden waste is biodegradable, once sent to landfill this biodegradable material starts to decompose without oxygen which produces methane, a highly dangerous landfill gas which contributes to global warming.
How to dispose
Doncaster Council in Partnership Blackwall offer Composters to residents at reduced rates.

Notes
By composting your organic waste you will also benefit from the end product, composted waste provides an excellent soil conditioner which improves soil structure and fertility.
Computers
How to dispose
Computers can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre where they will be recycled by scrap merchants.
Cooking Oil
How to dispose
All Household Waste Recycling Centres accept small quantities of cooking oil for recycling from your household.
Notes
Pouring oil down the drain is illegal. It is also harmful to the environment and if it reaches rivers and streams it causes pollution and kills local wildlife.
Commercial Waste
How to dispose
Please consult your local telephone directory for companies accepting commercial waste. Could this waste be recycled? Consult your local directory for recycling companies or contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for advice.
Notes
Commercial Waste is not accepted at Household Waste Recycling Centres.
CRT’s Cathode Ray Tubes or Fluorescent Tubes
CRT’s are classed as hazardous waste. CRT’s can be taken to Armthorpe and Balby Household Waste Recycling Centres to be recycled.

Dead Animals
If you find a dead animal on the side of the road, please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 who will arrange for it to be collected.

Egg Boxes
How to dispose
Cardboard egg boxes can be recycled or placed in a composter.
Notes
Many schools or playgroups may find these boxes useful for craft purposes. Try to purchase eggs in cardboard boxes rather than plastic.
Electrical Appliances
Try to reuse the appliance when you no longer need it.
How to dispose
Unwanted items can be collected by Remove. Please contact Tel: 01302 736960 for a free collection, items collected by Remove will be reused. Items can also be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre where they will either be reused or recycled by scrap merchants. If items cannot be reused there is a charge for this service.

How to dispose
Old engines, drained of oil, can be taken to a scrap merchant or put in the scrap skip at any Household Waste Recycling Centre.

How to dispose
Engine Oil can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre where it is recycled.

Engine oil is illegal to burn or dispose of down a drain.
Envelopes
Do your bit for the environment, remember to buy envelope’s made from recycled paper or sustainable forests.
How to dispose
Envelopes cannot be recycled due to the glue and can be disposed of in your bin. Alternatively you can cut the glued areas off and place in kerbside green box. Envelopes can be placed in a composter.
Notes
Envelopes can be reused by covering the original address with a label, they can also be used as scrap paper to jot down a shopping list.

Flower Pots
How to dispose
Take them to any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Notes
Flowerpots can be reused or returned to garden centres if in good condition. If pots are broken they can be placed in the bottom of other pots to improve drainage.
Fluorescent Tubes

Foreign Currency
How to dispose
If you have any spare change from your holiday, many airports and airlines offer a collection point, this money is sent to numerous charities in the area.
Notes
If you have returned to the UK many travel agents have a collection box at the exchange counter.
Fridges and Freezers
How to dispose
If the fridge/ freezer cannot be reused it will be recycled, please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for a collection. Alternatively fridge/freezers can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre

Furniture
Doncaster Council work in partnership with Remove, a community enterprise offering affordable furniture to people in Doncaster on a low income.
How to dispose
Is your furniture re-usable? If so please contact Remove 01302 736960 for a free collection.
If your furniture cannot be reused it can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre for recycling or please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000 for a collection. There is a charge for this service.

Garden Waste
The green waste collected is sent for composting locally to improve the soil structure around the borough.
How to dispose
Your garden waste can be disposed of in your green wheeled bin.
Notes
Garden waste can also be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre for recycling.
Gas cylinders (LPG’s)
Please return all gas cylinders to retailers or suppliers so they can be reused.
How to dispose
If you cannot return the cylinder do not place in the bin, please take them to Household Waste Recycling Centre. LPG's can be taken to Armthorpe, Balby, Carcroft and Rossington Household Waste Recycling Centres ONLY.
Glass
All glass containers are easily recycled, every tonne of glass recycled saves 1.2 tonnes of raw material, such as sand, limestone and soda ash.

All glass bottles and jars can be placed in your kerbside green box, taken to your local bring site or Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The most common method is a doorstep delivery, some shops still sell milk in glass bottles, please remember to return the glass bottle. Please wash and squash all plastic milk containers they can be recycled at any Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Mobile Phones
How to dispose
Mobile phones can be placed in your kerbside green box or returned to a mobile phone shop.

Disposable nappies take hundreds of years to break down in landfill sites.
How to dispose

Try to use cotton or terry towelling nappies wherever possible as they can be reused over and over again.
Newspapers
How to dispose
Newspaper and magazines can be placed in your kerbside green box, local bring site or any Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Packaging
How to dispose
Depending on the packaging, you may be able to put it in your kerbside green box, or take it to any bring site or Household Waste Recycling Centre. If the packaging cannot be recycled place in your domestic bin.
Notes
Try to buy goods which have little or no packaging.
For example: Buy loose fruit & vegetables rather than pre-packed and refills for products where available.
Paint
Paints can contain hazardous chemicals which must not be poured down the drain.
How to dispose
Many DIY stores will also take back unwanted paint. For further information on how to dispose of paint please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000.
Notes
Local community groups or charities will sometimes be able to make use of usable paints.
Paper
Every tonne of paper recycled requires 40% less energy and water to produce than paper manufactured from virgin wood pulp. It can also reduce air pollution by 74% and water pollution by 35%. It also saves trees and therefore reduces the destroying effects on habitats and the environment.

Wherever possible try not to buy items that do not have lots of plastic packaging.
Also plastic containers such as fast food trays and ice cream tubs can be reused as storage containers.
Polystyrene
How to dispose
If polystyrene is part of the packaging when electrical appliance are delivered, at the time you can ask for the packaging to be returned to the company for reuse or recycle.
Postcards
How to dispose
Postcards can be recycled when placed in your local paper bank or kerbside green box. Cards can also be reused, made into gift tags or donated to your local playgroup.
Printer Cartridges
How to dispose
Please place used cartridges in your kerbside green box or they can be taken to certain charity shops where they may have monetary value. This money is ploughed into the charitable or community activities undertaken.
Notes
Used printer, photocopier and fax cartridges can be recycled, they are simply cleaned and refilled. Consider buying cartridges that have already been refilled.

How to dispose
Some textile banks also take these items.
Notes
Any good quality quilts or other items of bedding that you no longer need can be taken to your local charity shop.

How to dispose

Toilet Rolls
How to dispose
Toilet roll middles can be recycled in the cardboard skip at any Household Waste Recycling Centre or alternatively they can be placed in your green bin.

Tyres
How to dispose
Please dispose of your unwanted tyres in a responsible manner and take them to any Household Waste Recycling Centre. Commercial tyres will not be accepted.

Vehicles

Water Cartridges
BRITA take their responsibility to environmental issues very seriously and in line with growing consumer demand for greener living, BRITA has launched a new in store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores such as Robert Dyas, Argos and Cargo. Other major retailer collection points will be following soon.
The BRITA branded bins will be located next to the existing water filter category in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.

Washing MachineWhite Goods
How to dispose
White goods that are still in working order can be reused and will be collected free of charge, please contact Customer Services on 01302 736000. White goods can also be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre.
For items unsuitable for repair a collection service is available. There is a charge for this service.
White goods include: Dishwashers, Dryers, Washing Machines and Cookers.
