The Waste Problem
Introduction
Every year in the United Kingdom 28 million tonnes of waste is produced and each household will throw away over a tonne of waste. For every tonne of rubbish produced in our homes another 25 tonnes of waste were created during manufacturing and production processes.
Last year in Doncaster over 160,000 tonnes of household waste was produced and sent for disposal at landfill. This represents a waste of resources and energy, as well as a waste of money. Landfilling our rubbish carries with it the potential for serious environmental damage, pollution of groundwater from leachate and problems of methane gas.
Local Authorities have to pay to dispose of household rubbish. The cost of this service is included in Council Tax payments made by residents. By reducing the quantity of household waste, you will not only be helping the environment but will also be helping to control the growth of your Council Tax.
A solution to the waste problem will only be achieved with the help of each and every individual member of the public. Small actions by one person soon add up to a huge difference when there are thousands of people choosing to take action together.
