The benefits of recycling

After reducing and reusing as much as possible, we should then think about how we can recycle what's left. Over half of the rubbish in our dustbins could be recycled.

Recycling is all about collecting and sorting items from waste which can then be made into new products. By recycling we can help to reduce the need to use raw materials, which in turn conserves natural resources. Recycling uses less energy and causes less pollution than using raw materials and it also reduces the amount of waste being sent for incineration or to landfill. Given the right conditions recycling makes sense both financially and environmentally.

Last year in Doncaster over 24% of household waste was recycled. The Government has set challenging targets to increase household waste recycling.

This year we need to be recycling at least 37% of household waste. These targets will only be achieved with the help and active co-operation of every resident in Doncaster.

Recycling is a positive action which you can take to help the environment. If you don't already recycle, consider how you can begin to take advantage of the numerous facilities provided by the Council. Further details can be obtained from Customer Services (01302) 736000.
