Woodlands

The Woodlands included in the Greenspace Audit are all Council owned and publicly accessible. Woodlands form dominant features in much of the landscape of the Borough. Their value for amenity, sport, and conservation is inestimable.

In total there are 66 publicly accessible, Council owned Woodlands in the Borough, covering 1300 acres of land. All the sites are listed below.

A quantity assessment has been undertaken based upon the Forestry Commission standard of 500 people per hectare of publicly accessible woodland within a five-mile radius or 4.94 acres per 1000. The assessment of supply by ward per head of population has been undertaken. This indicates that the average is 4.23 acres per 1000 head of population. On a ward by ward basis, 14 wards are deficient and 7 meet or are above the standard.

Hierarchy

A hierarchy of Parks, Nature Conservation sites and Woodlands has been established. The details of how this has been developed are included in the Public Parks section of the Audit. When the hierarchy was applied, 6 District Woodlands, 25 Community Woodlands and 35 Neighbourhood Woodlands have been identified as follows:

District Woodlands

Community Woodlands

The remainder are Neighbourhood Woodlands.

More Information on Woodlands and the results of the public consultation can be found in The Greenspace Strategy for Doncaster (see attached .pdf in the left hand menu).

Forestry Stewardship Council Certification

Doncaster Council's woodlands have been certified as being managed in a sustainable and responsible way in accordance with criteria set out by the Forestry Stewardship Council and United Kingdom Woodland Assurance Scheme. It demonstrates the Council's commitment to protecting and managing its woods in line with worldwide-recognised standards. This ensures that the woods, all of which are open to the public, will continue to provide both a stimulating, recreational opportunity for people and a haven for local wildlife for many years to come.
