Formal Open Spaces

Formal Open Space forms the most important part of Greenspace within the Borough due to its major contribution to public sports and recreation. Formal open spaces include facilities such as pitches (football, cricket, rugby - both league and union, and hockey) greens, courts, athletics tracks and other miscellaneous sites e.g. training areas.

Outdoor sports facilities that are not, as a matter of policy and practice, available for public use, such as professional sporting arenas (including the Keepmoat Stadium) are not included. Formal Open Space also excludes all golf facilities, water based recreational areas, indoor sports and leisure centres.

The National Playing Field Association has set a standard of 4 - 4.5 acres per 1000 population of adult and outdoor youth playing space. This Standard should include within it, a specific allocation of 3 acres for pitch sports.

In total 117 Formal Open Space areas in the Borough have been identified. These publicly accessible sites cover a total of 1018 acres of land and are listed in the table attached.

Facilities

The Greenspace Audit has included a complete database of sports and recreation facilities throughout the Borough. Follow the Facilities link in related documents for the locations of each of the following facilities within the borough and (where applicable) links to respective external bodies.
