Energy ratings provide a measure of how energy efficient your home is. We wouldn't buy a car without asking how many miles to the gallon the car will travel. It's surprising, therefore, that so few of us are aware of the energy running costs of our own homes.
Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council is a member of the National Home Energy Rating (NHER) scheme. The NHER scheme is administered by National Energy Services (NES) Ltd., a trading subsidiary of the charity National Energy Foundation (NEF). The NEF, a registered charity, was established to encourage energy efficiency through practical projects.
The NHER is expressed on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the most energy efficient. The rating takes into account the design and form of construction, the efficiency of the heating system and controls, the fuel used, the lighting system, appliances and standing charges. The NHER rating also considers the local climate which can make a large difference to energy running costs.
