The Environment

Almost half of the UK's carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions come from the energy we use every day - at home, at work and when we travel.  CO2 and other 'greenhouse gases' are generated through the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) to produce energy.  These gases are damaging the environment we live in and are causing climate change.

If the Earth warms, the world's climate will change and sea levels will rise. Rainfall in particular is likely to be affected, with some areas drier and others wetter. People, animals and plants will have to try to adjust to the changing conditions.

Although it is true there are still some uncertainties, we know enough about the threat of climate change to be satisfied that the problem is genuine and serious.

The UK has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2010 and seeks a 60% reduction in emissions by 2050.  By committing to save the energy you use every day, you can help prevent climate change and achieve UK targets.  We burn fuels such as coal, oil, or gas for energy in power stations to make electricity for running electrical appliances and lighting; to heat the home; and for cooking. If we cut the amount of energy we use in our homes and cars, we reduce the CO2 emissions that increase the risk of climate change.

Most of us are using much more energy than we need to, and are therefore producing unnecessary CO2 emissions.

Using energy in the home is also responsible for producing oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. These compounds add to the problem of acid rain which is harmful to wildlife and to our built heritage.
