Dealing with Stray Dogs

The Council has a legal duty to deal with stray dogs. This duty is fulfilled by the Dog Warden Service whose aim is help you if you lose your dog and to help prevent stray dogs from being a danger in traffic or a nuisance to people.

More information on the Dog Warden Service can be found by clicking on the Dog Warden web page in the left hand menu.

Other Stray Animals

Under the Animal Act 1971 the Council can impound any livestock which has strayed onto Council land and also impound livestock that has strayed onto private land when written request is received from the landowner. We will notify the police of the straying animal and inform them that we intend to impound it.

The animals are only returned to their owners after satisfactory proof of ownership has been produced and payment has been made for any damages and expenses incurred.

To report a lost animal or for further information contact us using the details found at the top of this web page.
