Active Sports is aimed at young people who have learnt the basic skills of their chosen sport (either through school or in the community) and have the ability and desire to improve their sports skills. Active Sports will provide local coaching and competitive opportunities, and will provide routes into county-level performance and beyond. This will be achieved by establishing forty-five Sports Partnerships covering the whole of England, bringing together local authorities, education, and sports organisations.
The local authorities of Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Sheffield have now created one of these partnerships supported by Sport England and the Lottery Sports Fund. The South Yorkshire Partnership will ensure the nine sports - athletics, basketball, cricket, girls football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming, and tennis - are delivered in accordance with a series of national development frameworks, which will guide the local delivery of the programme.
