“Reservoir” as defined by the Reservoirs Act 1975 means a reservoir for water and is a “raised reservoir” if it is designed to hold, or capable of holding, water above the natural level of any part of the land adjoining the reservoir.
Prior to 2003 the Council had a duty under the Reservoirs Act to establish and maintain for their area a register showing the large raised reservoirs situated wholly or partly in the area. The Council was also for the purposes of the Act “enforcement authority” and had a duty to ensure that undertakers (owners) observed and complied with the requirements of the Act.
The Water Act 2003 transferred responsibility for the role as enforcement authority to the Environment Agency with effect from 1st October 2004. Those reservoirs lying within the Doncaster Council district, and formerly included on the register, are listed below:
