Edlington Pit Wood

Edlington Pit Wood is your community woodland that has been developed with the local community and partner organisations.

The newly planted woodland is criss crossed with paths and surfaced tracks, and provides an ideal place for walkers, cyclists and horse riders to explore and enjoy.

The 37 1/2 hectare site has a lot to offer through a variety of trees, grasslands, wetlands and ponds and provides great views over the local countryside and Doncaster.

The park is situated off Broomhouse Lane, Edlington, Doncaster.

• The site is 37 1/2 hectares in total 
• 44500 trees were planted
• There are 2700m of paths
• There are 14 1/2 hectares of woodland     

History Timeline

1911 - Yorkshire Main Colliery began producing coal.

1922 - Colliery owners provided a village with open air swimming bath.

1930 - The pit head baths were opened.

1947 - 1952 - The new pit bottom was completed. This enabled the use of underground locomotives and large mine cars.

1953 - 2,391 men were employed at the colliery. There was a daily saleable output of 3,840 tons of coal per day.

1985 - The Pit ended production (after the end of the miners strike)

1986 - The Pit was sealed

January 2002 - Development of the Community Woodland
