Introduction

row of people in walking bootsToday’s lifestyles discourage many from being active. An inactive lifestyle is one of the main causes of heart and circulatory disease. Just 30 minutes of physical activity such as a brisk walk, or short cycle ride 5 times a week, is enough to physically reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Walking is almost perfect exercise requiring no equipment or expense, it is the best way for people from all walks of life to become more active. Any walking is better than none. Gentle strolling is a good start for people who are not used to exercise. Brisk walking is the goal, because the heart reaches its natural ‘training zone’ when it has to work a little harder than normal.

If you haven't cycled 'since you were young' don't be discouraged as Doncaster has many easy cycle routes, both in town and out in the surrounding countryside.

And it’s not just about physical exercise! One of the most important benefits people associate with visiting the countryside is the sense of relaxation and well-being.
