The Trans Pennine Trail (TPT), officially opened in September 2001, is the first long distance multi-user trail in the Country, linking the coastal towns of Southport in the West with Hornsea in the East. On its route across the north of England, the trail passes through major towns and cities including Liverpool, Manchester and Hull.
There are also routes options between Leeds, York and Chesterfield, making around 350 miles (563 Km) of easy graded surfaced paths. Walkers and cyclists can use the entire trail, with many miles also available for horse riders. Most of the route is also suitable for wheelchair and pushchair users, providing a great facility for families.
The trail is also part of the national cycle network route 62, and is the first path in the country to be designated as part of an international walking route. Between the ferry terminals of Liverpool and Hull, the trail forms part the European Long Distance walking Route 8 (E8), which will eventually connect the west Coast of Ireland with Istanbul!

Some 25 miles (40 Km) of the trail passes through Doncaster from its western boundary at Bolton Upon Dearne to its northern boundary at Sykehouse.
As you travel along the trail you will follow riverbanks, canal towpaths and disused railway lines, pass through woodland, farmland and villages. Look out for signs of our industrial past and keep your eyes open for the wildlife too.
Much of the trail is traffic free, making it ideal for recreation and even travelling to work and school.
From time to time we carry out resurfacing work to improve accessibility of the Trail
Occasionally it is necessary to divert or temporarily close the Trans Pennine Trail to allow maintenance and development work to be carried out.
Details of such diversions and closures in the Doncaster area can be found on our Rights of Way Temporary Closures page, at the left hand side of this page.
Details of national route changes can be found on the Trans Pennine Trail website, which can be accessed via the link below.

The Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail is a voluntary group of people who support the trail in a variety of ways, by lobbying, giving practical assistance, and promotion.
The Steward Scheme is operated by the Trans Pennine Trail project, Sustrans and Friends. Stewards act as eyes and ears when out and about on the trail.
