What are the responsibilities of the Gypsy Liaison Team?

The Gypsy Team manages and maintains the Authority's Gypsy and Traveller Sites, provides advice and liaison with other agencies and all travelling people. Liaison and management of unauthorised encampment is also a responsibility of this department.

Are Gypsies and travellers protected under race discrimination laws?

Yes - Gypsies and travellers are protected from discrimination by the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act 1998, together with all ethnic groups who have a particular culture, language and values.

What is the Ethnic Minorities and Travellers Achievement Service?

In April 2005, the Multicultural Education Centre and Traveller Service were merged to form a new service; the Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS). The service works with schools, families and other agencies to raise the attainment of Ethnic Minority and Traveller pupils. 

EMTAS provides support for pupils with English as an additional language, refugee, asylum seeker and Traveller pupils. Advice, consultation, training and resources are available to schools and other agencies.

What do EMTAS provide for pupils from travellers’ communities?

EMTAS Traveller Service is able to offer a wide range of support to schools and families. Support may include:-

• Liaison with schools, parents, outside agencies and other Traveller Education Services.
• Delivery of INSET/training for schools and other agencies.
• Resources and displays for use in promoting cultural awareness.
• Direct teaching of pupils, including assessment, target setting and provision of support packages
• Advice to schools on the content of Distance Learning Packs. Training for parents on how to use Distance Learning packs
• Advice to schools and parents
• Assistance to meet DfES targets for Traveller pupils
• Initiatives to promote educational provision for children from Traveller communities.
