Doncaster museum, founded originally by the Doncaster Scientific (now Naturalists') Society, has throughout its history maintained a strong involvement in recording, and monitoring the flora, fauna and geology (biodiversity) of Doncaster and its region.
Over the years, the museum has been privileged to have had on its staff some of the most active, and influential naturalists to have worked in the Yorkshire region, some being nationally and even internationally renowned.
Commencing with the museum's first curator, Dr H. H. Corbett who had interests in geology, botany and entomology, the museum's reputation in the natural sciences has been maintained by a succession of eminent enthusiasts.
They include personalities like Mike Clegg (later to freelance with his long running Yorkshire TV series Clegg's People), Dr E. F. Gilmour (an international expert on Timber Beetles of economic importance), Dr Peter Skidmore (a conservation campaigner, world expert on Flies of medical and economic importance and pioneer in the ecology of the 'Cow pat') and Professor Paul Buckland (a pioneer in the field of paleo-entomology, whose work on insect remains in local peat deposits has unravelled the ecological history and formation of Thorne and Hatfield Moors, and charted our climatic history from the close of the last Ice age).
The fieldwork and researches undertaken by Doncaster Museum staff over the years have formed the basis for the designation of most of Doncaster's statutory Sites of Scientific Interest (Denaby Ings; Hatfield Moors, Edlington Wood; Potteric Carr; Sandall Beat Wood; Shirley Pool; Sprotbrough Gorge; Thorne Moors) and several elsewhere in Yorkshire.
It has always been the tradition of Doncaster Museum to publish the results of its natural history surveys, field studies and research on its scientific collections. With the current urgency to monitor, understand and conserve the rapidly changing Biodiversity of Doncaster and its neighbouring regions, the following bibliography of publications by museum staff (1962 to 2003) has been assembled as the Museum's contribution to local Biodiversity studies.
The following listings contain over 450 entries arranged chronologically under subject headings. To locate subjects, species, localities, titles, dates etc., use the Find menu (Ctrl + F).
