Doncaster Reading Aids Unit gives access to print for blind or partially sighted people. The Unit is open to all people with a visual impairment and anyone who finds print difficult to access. A confidential transcription service is available not only to individuals, but also to organisations, who need print in different formats. A growing number of departments and organisations are using the service in order to comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. Letters, leaflets, reports, minutes, publications can all be transcribed into either Large Print, Braille, or on to tape cassettes.
To assist people with visual impairments we use scanners, computers with speech software and an electronic braille embosser. We have screen readers that can magnify text to suit the individual.
Large print books are provided at all libraries in the borough including the mobile library, as well as hospitals and prisons, for people who are housebound or in residential homes.
Talking books are available as standard audio cassettes or CDs and are usually the full version of the printed book. People who have sight difficulties can borrow them at no charge.
Talking Teletext allows people to listen to the news, weather reports, travel and all other items accessible on TV Teletext services.
The Reading Aids Unit is located in the entrance foyer of the Central Library in Doncaster town centre. We occupy a ground floor position easily accessible to disabled people and their friends.
You can contact the Co-ordinator of the Reading Aids Unit by phone: 01302-735391 or E-Mail: Marilyn.Parkin@doncaster.gov.uk . If you require documents to be transcribed they can be dropped in at the Unit, sent by post or e-mailed as an attachment.
