Roman Catholics

The Roman Catholic diocese of Hallam (in which the Doncaster district is situated) has appointed Sheffield Archives to act as its diocesan record office. Any original records deposited will therefore be found in Sheffield Archives, although Doncaster Archives holds microfilms of some of the registers deposited in Sheffield. These are listed below.

Records relating to Roman Catholics in the eighteenth century will also be found amongst the records of the West Riding of Yorkshire court of quarter sessions. After the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, the government was understandably suspicious of all Roman Catholics. One of the consequences of this was to oblige them to declare details of their property to Quarter Sessions, creating a register of 'papists estates'. This is to be found at the West Yorkshire Archives Service Headquarters.
