Newspapers
For two hundred years, until eclipsed by radio and then by television, local newspapers have been a major source of information about all aspects of local life. Doncaster, as a focal point on the network of transport, marketing and social life for the locality of south-east Yorkshire and north-east Nottinghamshire was the place of publication of a number of newspapers.
The newspapers available in the Central Library include the Doncaster Gazette from 1786 to 1981, the Doncaster Chronicle from 1838 to 1963 and the South Yorkshire Times from 1877 to the present. There are also a number of more recent titles, including the Yorkshire Evening Post (1925 to 1970), Doncaster Free Press (from 1967), Doncaster Evening Post (1970 to 1983), and Doncaster Star (from 1983).
