Monumental Inscriptions

Inscriptions on monuments and gravestones in churches, churchyards and cemeteries have been a source of interest for many years. They were carefully recorded by many antiquarians and early historians, as can be seen by anyone opening, for example, Joseph Hunter's South Yorkshire (published in 1828 and 1831).

Modern family history has similarly taken great interest in this aspect of research, and the Doncaster and District Family History Society (DDFHS) has made detailed surveys of the monumental inscriptions (MIs) in the area. Copies of these are available at both Doncaster Archives and the Local History Library, as well as at the DDFHS reading room.

The inscriptions are in the parish churchyard, unless otherwise stated.
