Hearth Tax

The Hearth Tax was a national tax based on the number of hearths in a household. The returns give the township, the name of the person assessed and the number of hearths. The fullest return for South Yorkshire is that for Lady Day (25 March) 1672. The return has been published in David Hey (editor), The Hearth Tax Returns for South Yorkshire Ladyday 1672 (University of Sheffield, 1991). A copy is available in Doncaster Archives and in the Local History Library in the Doncaster Central Library.

Doncaster Archives holds no original records relating to the hearth tax.
