Local Access Forum

The role of the Local Access Forum

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 created a new statutory right of access to open countryside and common land. Local Access Forums have been set up across England and Wales. They offer anyone, who uses or enjoys the countryside, the chance to have their say in how access to that precious resource should be protected and improved.

The Doncaster Local Access Forum was created in September 2003. Its purpose is to provide advice to Doncaster Council and Natural England on the implementation of the new rights introduced by the Act and how to make the countryside more accessible and enjoyable for open-air recreation.

The Forum represents the interests of everyone who lives, works, or just enjoys the countryside including landowners, farmers, business, health, heritage, nature conservation, sport including water sport, forestry, the less able, trade unions, transport and all recreational interests. The Council believes that a balanced forum, representing all interests, should play a vital role in the future of our open spaces.

The Forum has 9 members, 2 of whom are Doncaster Council elected members. Members are appointed to the Forum following a selection process. The Forum currently meets approximately 4 times per year. Meetings are advertised in advance and open to the public. The public may ask questions on the business of the meeting at the discretion of the Chair.

We are looking for new members to join the Forum. You do not have to live in Doncaster but would be expected to devote the necessary time to research local matters of interest and bring them to the Forum.

Members give their time on a voluntary basis but mileage and other expenses are paid.

If you are interested in joining the Forum or require any further information please contact the Public Rights of Way Team.
