The Doncaster Youth Service Awards Team offers a range of informal, nationally accredited awards which can help every young person in the Borough to achieve their full potential by providing recognition for activities in which they already take part, or by encouraging them to try out new adventures.

Groups, Youth Centres and other organisations may deliver these awards under the guidance of Doncaster Youth Service acting in its capacity as Operating Authority for the various national organisations. Group registration is a simple and straightforward process and is currently free of charge.

Young people who do not belong to any group can access the awards through the Open Award Centre which operates from Elmfield House. Participants will be asked to pay a Registration Fee which currently ranges between £5.00 and £16.50, depending on the award chosen.

The principal awards supported by Doncaster Youth Service are :

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The world-renowned Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provides a personal development programme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels for young people between the ages of 14 and 25. There are four main themes, Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and the Expedition with an additional Residential project at the Gold level.

Youth Achievement Award
The Youth Achievement Awards are an activity-based approach to peer education. The Awards are designed to help develop more effective participative practice by encouraging young people to progressively take more responsibility in selecting, planning and leading activities that are based on their interests. The peer group model encourages the development of a wide range of life skills through a flexible and informal approach. The Youth Achievement Awards are available for young people from 14 years upwards.

Youth Challenge Award
Similar in concept to the Youth Achievement Award, the Youth Challenge is aimed at young people between 11 and 13 years, though it can also be appropriate for older age groups, especially those with learning difficulties.

ASDAN Short Course Awards
These awards are designed to accredit specific activities and are available for all age groups. Currently available themes are; Adventure & Residential, Expressive Arts, Sex & Relationships, Foundation for Work and many more which are being added to all the time. National accreditation can be gained through these awards for as little as 10 hours participation.

Complete Crew Certificate
This award accredits competence in boat handling on the inland waterways of Britain. The skills gained include steering the boat and the safe operation of locks, swing bridges and other canal structures. The course, which is a minimum of 3 days duration, is based on Adams' Ark, the Doncaster Council Community Barge. Adams Ark is normally based at Skipton so that cruises take place on one of the most picturesque sections of the British canal system.
