Will I have to pay?

Some of the services that Doncaster Council provide are free, but you will be charged for others such as home care and residential or nursing home care.

How much you pay depends on how much money you have. The money you have or 'your asset's include things like premium bonds, bank and building society accounts, your pension and maybe the value of your home.

The Assessment Officer or Social Worker will arrange for a Visiting Officer from the Financial Assessment Section to visit you or your carer(s) at a venue of your choice to discuss your financial circumstances, complete a benefits check, fill in the relevant forms and work out how much the Council will pay towards your care package and how much you will have to pay.

Generally if you have more than £20,000 worth of assets you will be expected to pay the full cost of care yourself. If your assets are worth less than £20,000, Doncaster Council may help you pay.

Doncaster Council will also help you claim any Benefits you are entitled to from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)

Usually, Doncaster Council will pay the residential or nursing home the full amount of your care and will send you a bill so that you can pay your share. There is a limit on how much Doncaster Council will pay for your care in a home.

If you choose a home which charges more than the Doncaster Council limit or 'Contract Fee' the additional amount will have to be paid by a relative or friend and is called a 'third party top up fee'.

Doncaster Council may collect your state benefit on your behalf from which you will receive a weekly personal allowance which is increased annually in line with inflation. If you or a friend or relative collects your benefits you will be allowed to keep this amount for your personal needs.

The contract fees are revised each April. As a guide, the fees for 2011-2012 are quoted in the book attached to this page.
