Lost and Stray Dogs

What to do if you lose your dog

All stray dogs found within the Doncaster Borough are taken to Mount Pleasant Kennels, Wakefield Road, Hampole, Doncaster. If your dog is lost, you should contact the kennels between 8.30am and 5pm any day of the week, on 01302 722748.

Any dog found straying will be picked up by the Dog Warden. If we can identify the dog immediately – for instance, if it has an identity tag, tattoo, microchip or other ID - the dog will be returned to the owner at the Dog Warden's discretion. There is normally no fee for this.  If we cannot immediately identify the dog’s owner, we will register the dog and take it to local boarding kennels.

When a dog is taken to kennels to be looked after, its owner has seven days to claim it back. When doing so the owner must pay a fixed fee, which is set by central Government, and all fees incurred for the dog’s care and kennelling.

Dogs not claimed within seven days will be made available for re-homing.

What to do if you find a stray dog

Between 8.30am and 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, ring the Council on 01302 736000, and ask for the Dog Warden Service. You will be advised that you can drop the dog off at the Council’s holding Kennels at Mount Pleasant Kennels, Wakefield Road, Hampole, Doncaster, DN6 7EX.

If you are unable to take the dog, arrangements can be made for the Dog Warden to call and collect the contained dog from your premises, often the same working day.

Outside normal office hours on a weekday and at any time at weekends, you can contact 01302 341628 for advice and information. Arrangements can be made for you to take the dog to the Council’s holding Kennels at Mount Pleasant Kennels, Wakefield Road, Hampole, Doncaster.

Changes in the Law

Anyone finding a stray dog in Doncaster should contact the Council rather than the Police. Recent changes in the law mean that the Council has responsibility for stray dogs, rather than the Police.

If you find a stray dog during the day time, you should call the Council on 01302 736000, and a customer service adviser will give you advice about how to drop the dog off with the Council or arrange for an officer to collect the dog. Outside normal office hours, you should call 01302 341628, and the Council’s out of hours officers will be able to help you.

If you find a dog behaving aggressively, you should still call South Yorkshire Police on 01142 20 20 20, as the Police continue to have responsibility for dangerous dogs. You should also contact the Police if you believe your dog has been stolen, or for any other dog-related criminal matter.

If you lose your dog, you can call the Mount Pleasant boarding kennels on 01302 722748, during office hours, as they look after stray dogs in the Doncaster area; if your dog has been found and reported as a stray, it will usually be taken there.
