The Trading Standards Consumer Advice Unit provides friendly legal and practical advice to consumers related to the purchase of goods and services and the acquisition of credit. Very often consumers are unsure of their legal rights when purchasing consumer goods, particularly when some defect or problem is found. The advice unit tries to help consumers in these matters and often will contact a trader to advise them on the law and try to mediate between the parties if possible.

We have consumer tips and advice on:

We also have self-help Consumer Advice Sheets on a wide range of issues covering problems with goods and services, and what to do if you are in a dispute.

For useful information and support for consumers shopping across the EU, visit the UK European Consumer Centre at www.ukecc.net. This site is delivered by the Trading Standards Institute.
