South Yorkshire Motor Trade Business Partnership

Introduction to the scheme

The expectation of quality for both new and used vehicles has never been higher and Trading Standards Services continue to receive high numbers of complaints relating to vehicle purchases. It comes as no surprise that consumers are said to be apprehensive in their dealings with all aspects of the motor trade.

The Trading Standards Services are aware that this perception is the result of practices carried out by a minority of traders, but unfortunately public opinion remains sceptical.

The aim of the four South Yorkshire Authorities is to develop a motor trade partnership scheme that will help consumers to buy with confidence and assist those reputable businesses wishing to demonstrate a commitment to trade fairly.

Membership to the scheme will be open to motor vehicle retailers (new and used) located in the four South Yorkshire Authorities.

The scheme is part of the Local Authority Assured Trader Scheme Network (LAATSN), which means it is nationally recognised and supported by the Trading Standards Service and the Office of Fair Trading.

Terms and conditions (Code)

The following document contains the terms and conditions which constitute the ‘Code’ of the South Yorkshire Trading Standards Services Motor Trade Partnership.

Compliance with this code is mandatory for all businesses.

Disputes

The occasional dispute between a consumer and a partnership member is an unfortunate fact of life. In most cases this is due to misunderstanding or incomplete information. Ordinarily the best way to resolve a dispute is by friendly agreement between the parties. The alternative could be legal proceedings, leading to the possibility of disproportionate costs, lengthy proceedings and an unpredictable outcome.

In order to work successfully, dispute resolution usually requires some compromise by both parties and an understanding of this is essential in order to reach an agreed solution.
